Outreach Initiative: Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation Center

This ministry meets with the residents of Sunbridge. The members pray, sing songs and share testimonies. The members gave the residents “goody” bags and fresh fruit. Visits were also made to the residents that were bedridden, where songs were sung, prayers lifted up and fellowship was had by everyone. The April Club ministry members also took two young ladies on a shopping trip to buy clothes. The girls were allowed to shop for 3 ½ hours and were sincerely appreciative of the experience.

This ministry provides an opportunity for the members of the ministry to fellowship with persons in the community at large through youth baseball, youth and adult men's basketball, co-ed softball, aerobics, and youth dance.


Azizi Children¹s Ministry

This ministry is for children ages 3-12 years of age.

The Azizi Children's Ministry has purchased books for its outreach initiative and spends time on every second Saturday reading stories to their peers and sharing light refreshments and fellowship.

Brotherhood

A ministry of men [18 years and older] at Zion Hill who work together to strengthen the family unit, community and church through service.

The Brotherhood's outreach effort at Odyssey III is a dedicated mission of rendering focused service to homeless men and women. The Brotherhood purchases, prepares and shares breakfast with 40 to 75 persons each fourth Sunday. In doing so, the Brotherhood has the privilege of witnessing the brothers of Odyssey III offer heartfelt and emotional prayers and testimonies about their lives.

The outreach of the Brotherhood at the Young Adult Guidance Center involves mentoring and offering assistance in an alternative environment. Moreover, the Brotherhood simply attempts to be role models for at-risk youth who have low self-esteem and are alienated from others. The interaction of the members of the Brotherhood with the youth at the guidance center helps the youth rebuild and reshape their lives using principles of Christianity.

The children and youth volunteers ages 8 years and older participate in the Product Rescue Center at the Community Food Bank. The members sort and pack food boxes which are subsequently given to various charitable organizations.

Christian Education Ministry

Assists and coordinates all christian education activities of the church.

The Christian Education Ministry has scripture readings and Bible Study every Friday morning. Every third Saturday of the month, members of the ministry visit the College Park Health Care Center for fellowship with residents. After a devotional service that includes prayer, scripture readings and singing of hymns, the members and residents share testimonies. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas visits, each resident was given a gift and a special reminder that they are loved.

A ministry that provides a conducive environment for all people to learn love and serve in a Christ-like manner.

Using the theme "Learning to Love Like Christ, Learning to Serve Like Christ, and Living to Be With Christ," the Church School's outreach centers on spiritual growth and service. The Church School continues its ongoing outreach to the children of NUCUP by bringing them to Church School each Saturday morning. The Church School has conducted teacher training classes and continues to offer a variety of classes to meet the desires and interests of the Church membership and community.

Provides members and the community-at-large with information on social, economic and political processes.

The Community Action/Business Ministry has continued its efforts to assist the church and community at large economically by posting and regularly updating the Job Bank that assists those in need of gainful employment. In addition, the businesses owned by church members are increased in their visibility via a Church Business Directory and by business displays during Stewardship weekend.

Greets visiting worshippers and hosts the bi-annual Fellowship for new members.

The Courtesy Guild sponsors and participates in monthly birthday parties for residents of Bonterra Nursing Home. The members purchase and serve all residents cake and ice cream. Each resident celebrating a birthday during the month receives a small gift.

Members of the Guild visits with residents of Bonterra Nursing Center to fellowship and share a video tape of the worship service and special program. At Christmas, members provide toiletry items, fruit baskets and other personal items to the residents.

The members of the Courtesy Guild also continue to extend courteous service to the Zion Hill Baptist Church visitors and the church family each Sunday morning as they arrive for morning worship. The members provide a new members reception twice a year to introduce new members to auxiliaries on a more personal level and to promote increased church involvement.



Culinary Ministry

Duties: Supervise the planning, the purchasing and the preparing of all meals and receptions sponsored by the Church.

The members of the Culinary Ministry provide food preparation and set up for the Zion Hill church family throughout the year. The team prepares breakfast on Sunday mornings, which is served after the eight o’clock service. Additionally, the team provides full meals for special observance days and programs.

A select group of members, voted on by the congregation, to assist the Pastor in caring for the needs of the Zion Hill Church family.

The Deacon Board assists the Pastor in conducting all facets of the church's outreach ministry. The Deacons are servants to the congregation, being responsible for expressing the church's concern for the general welfare of each member, through personal visits, telephone calls, cards, letters, etc. The Deacons assist the Pastor with ordinances of baptism and communion. The Deacons minister to the sick and shut in and assist the elderly members with their needs, and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ wherever they are called.



Deaconess Ministry

A group of women [usually the wife of a deacon] that assists the pastor and the Deacons Ministry in caring for the needs of the Zion Hill Church family.

The Deaconess Ministry continues their ongoing outreach at the Odyssey III homeless shelter. On the fourth Sunday of each month, members of the Deaconess Ministry, along with members of the Jr. Deacons and The Brotherhood, purchase, prepare and serve breakfast to approximately 100 persons at the Odyssey III shelter. The Deaconesses also work with the Dulaney House, a facility for children in emergency foster care. The Deaconesses spend approximately one hour interfacing with the children, engaging in activities such as reading and playing games.

The Deaconess Ministry supports the Dulaney House in areas where volunteers are needed such as acting as chaperones for outings and other off-campus activities, giving tutorials, reading stories, working with arts and crafts, playing games, special event celebrations, celebrating individual birthdays, and offering newsletter and computer classes. Members of the Deaconess Ministry monitor classrooms and nursery and toddler play areas, and bathe, change and feed babies. Some members of the Deacons Ministry volunteer to work with boys at The Dulaney House assisting with schoolwork, mentoring programs, sports activities, and maintaining the media center.



Disciples' Empowerment Summit
Outreach Initiative: The Disciples' Empowerment Summit Committee will undertake the task of developing three days of activities designed to enhance the spiritual growth of the body of believers. ::: Team: Bro. Empowered By God [EBG]

Enhances the spiritual development of members ages 19-39.

The EBG Ministry is continuing its work with the Genesis Shelter, which is a shelter for women with newborn babies. The members meet with the families bi-monthly on the first and third Monday to encourage open and honest fellowship. During the visits, EBG conducts workshops with the residents of the shelter on a variety of topics, including credit, relationships, conflict resolution, health and others.



Evangelism Ministry

A group of believers striving to help build God's kingdom on earth through leading others to Christ.

The Evangelism Ministry works passionately to call people to a relationship with God. As part of their sponsorship of the Annual Family and Friends Day, the Evangelism Ministry encourages Zion Hill members to invite family or friends who did not have a church home to service on Family and Friends Day. The Evangelism Ministry seeks to spread the good news about Jesus through actions, and the written and spoken word.



February Club

A ministry for members born in the month of February.

The members of the February Club support the children's ward at Grady Memorial Hospital. Members donate care baskets of items for newborns of first-time mothers. This outreach is done in conjunction with the Fountain of Life Ministry.

The February Club also assists the Christian Education Ministry with devotional services and fellowship at Integrated Health Services at College Park, Georgia.

Provides a positive outlet for our senior [50+] members and friends through spiritual and social fellowship.

Fountain of Life has as its outreach initiative the Family Support Services Program at Grady Memorial Hospital. Members of the Fountain of Life share love and concern with the new mothers on the newborn ward by preparing special gift baskets with items for the mother and newborn. The baskets are delivered to Grady Hospital with the assistance of the men of the Fountain of Life.



Health Ministry

Administers medical assistance and emergency first aid to individuals during church services and other major church functions.

Members of the Health Ministry provide medical assistance and emergency first aid to individuals during worship services and other church activities. At various times during the year, the Health Ministry offers free CPR certification, blood pressure screening and various classes, workshops and updates on the latest medical issues. Also, the Health Ministry provides medical and personal needs to our sick, shut-in, hospitalized and convalescent members.



Investment Ministry
A select group of members chosen to make conservative investments in the best interest of the church.



July Club

A ministry for members born in the month of July.

Members of the July Club visit the Carrie Steele Pitts Home monthly. The children who reside in Yates Cottage range in age from five to ten years. Members of the July Club donate school supplies, cosmetics, and have donated a television/VCR combination with educational videos or the children. The members also provide refreshments during their visits. The girls show their appreciation to the July Club by sharing prayers, gospel and holiday songs and graceful dancing. The July Club is working toward interacting more with the children to further enhance their relationship with them.



June Club
Outreach Initiative: Atlanta Day Shelter for Women + Children ::: President: Sis. Frances Pinkston Outreach Coordinator: Sis. Shirley Lucas

A ministry for members born in the month of June.

Every fourth Saturday, members of the June Club visit the Atlanta Day Shelter and engage the children in play and educational activities. The group works with the children through games, reading, watching videos, and other fun activities. While the children are occupied, the mothers are free to participate in worship service or engage in other pursuits at the shelter. Additionally, clothing and personal care items are donated.

Every fifth Sunday, the group prepares lunch for approximately 60 women, children, and staff. As no food is prepared on Sundays, this has become a much anticipated day for the residents at the shelter.

March Club
Outreach Initiative: Goodwill Industries : : Adopt-A-Family : : Adopt-A-Class ::: President: Sis. Doris Reynolds Outreach Coordinator: Sis. Chorsie Smith

A ministry for members born in the month of March.

Since the early 1990s, members of the March Club have volunteered as book sorters, cataloguers, cashiers and librarians to Goodwill Industries of Metropolitan Atlanta in the agency's book reclamation and sales program. With the funds derived from the sales program, Goodwill provides education, training and career guidance and development to hundreds of needy people within the community. In 1997, the March Club began a Fall Book Collection Drive which is held at the church. During the book drive, the March Club encourages all members of the church to bring their used books as contributions to Goodwill.

Members of the March Club interact with homeless shelters to identify and develop a plan of action to help a family who needs a hand up to get their lives focused in a positive direction. The goal of the March Club is to help one family at a time to begin life again on a firm footing.

In the Fall of 2000, the March Club adopted a first grade class at Blalock Elementary School. During the first semester of the 2000 school year, the March Club supported the class by purchasing educational items to assist the teacher in developing the skills of the children in this inner-city school.



Matrons Ministry

Serve the church through Christian ministry and working with issues that concern women of all ages.

The Matrons make monthly visits to Bell Hall, a maternity home for teens. The members mentor the young ladies through tutoring, career decision-making, job skills development, parenting advice and childcare. Each session at Bell Hall begins with a special greeting, updates, and ends with meditation. In addition, the Matrons have conducted lesions and discussion panels on budgeting, balancing a checkbook and writing checks, job interview skills, parenting skills and information on aptitude testing.



Men's Chorus

A music ministry for men ages 18 and older.

Zion Hill's Men's Chorus is continuing their efforts at Georgia Regional Hospital. On the fourth Saturday of each month, members from the chorus visit the adult unit and fellowship with the residents in songs, prayer and giving testimonies.



Minister's Fellowship

Provides ministerial assistance to the Pastor and church.

Members of the Ministers' Fellowship are in the planning stage for the prison ministry. The ministers will provide spiritual uplift and encouragement to brothers and sisters incarcerated in area prisons.



Missionary Ministry

Promotes Christian missions through a program of mission study, prayer, community missions and stewardship.

The Missionary Ministry is in the planning stage for a specific outreach initiative. The ministry continues to prepare clothing donated by a local department store by patching the clothing and preparing it for use. The ministry receives clothing for men, women and children.

The members anticipate starting outreach with My Sister's House [The Atlanta Union Mission] by September 2001. This facility provides short-term housing, meals and clothing for homeless and battered women and children. The members of the Missionary Ministry will begin orientation on July 17, 2001.

The Missionary Ministry continues to provide spiritual uplift to the bereaved families of our congregation through greeting cards, telephone calls, visits, consolation, and other support.

Provides childcare [ages 6 months to 4 years] for members and visitors during worship services on Sunday mornings.



Orientation Team
A group of members, chosen by the congregation, to welcome new members into the church and explain the structure and programs of the church.



Outreach Ministry Team

Serves as a liaison for the various church auxiliaries, committees and ministries regarding an outreach initiative. The Outreach Ministry Team interviews groups for possible inclusion as an outreach initiative. Upon request from any Church auxiliary, the Outreach Ministry is ready and willing to assist the auxiliary in selecting an outreach initiative. The Outreach Ministry also serves as liaison to organizations, churches or other non-profit entities as it donates gifts annually to these various organizations.

An Outreach Ministry Team initiative is visiting the Oak Hill Homes for teens in conjunction with the Senior Usher Board. The Outreach Team participates in birthday and fellowship celebrations where refreshments and gifts are provided for the children. Counselors and the teens are invited to Sunday morning worship service, Church School and various other Church activities, with special emphasis on attending the youth activities. Several teens have become members of the Church after attending some of these activities. The Outreach Ministry Team also volunteers at Metropolitan Atlanta Respite Center, a center for emotionally, physically and mentally challenged children. The facility was provided with needed supplies during the year and a television/VCR with educational videos for the children for Christmas.



Prison Ministry

Provides spiritual nourishment to incarcerated men and women.

The Prison Ministry is in reorganizational status currently identifying their base prison location for visitation. The Prison Ministry will provide its outreach to incarcerated men and women in conjunction with the Ministers' Fellowship. There are presently five trained members of the ministry ready to participate. The ministry projects August 2001 as the start date for visitation.



Rites of Passage
Outreach Initiative: Determined once in session ::: Lead Elders: Shelia Parker - Kentake : : Mike Weaver - Adigun Nkosi

A twelve-week program that teaches some of life's essential, character-producing lessons in the African and African American tradition for males and females ages 13 through 18.

The rites of passage programs, Kentake and Adigun Nkosi, have been in existence at Zion Hill since 1994. Kentake facilitates the transition of African American female youth into womanhood through various experiences and activities. Adigun Nkosi involves a sequence of planned activities and experiences that teach young African American males the qualities and responsibilities that are required in becoming strong African men.

Recruitment and Registration take place in August. Sessions are held each Sunday at 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m beginning late August through early November. OUKUMO, the closing program is held the Sunday following the last session in November.

The program is open to the community and there is no cost to participate.



Senior Usher Board

This group performs as doorkeepers for the church. They serve on the first and third Sundays of each month.

The Senior Usher Board seeks to fellowship with teenagers and build a Christian relationship by providing them with love. The members of the Senior Usher Board continue to reach out to the children of Oak Hill Homes through prayer, fellowship and by allowing the young men and women to give their personal testimonies. The members celebrate birthdays each month for all of the children having birthdays during the month by serving refreshments and providing each birthday child with a monetary gift.

The members of the Senior Usher Board support and attend the youth programs of Oak Hill Homes such as Black History Day Celebration and a Fellowship Dinner that included a display of the children's artwork, poems and other creations.



Senior Ministry Services (SMS)

SMS provides volunteer assistance to the senior and disabled members of Zion Hill Baptist Church, to ensure that their basic needs are met. This includes the areas of food, clothing, housing, health & wellness, entitlements, transportation, benefits, business matters, home management, and government services. SMS also serves as a liaison between other in-house ministries to co-coordinate the aforementioned services.



Single + Saved Ministry

A ministry that provides a framework in which single and saved believers can develop spiritually.

The Single and Saved Ministry members continue their outreach efforts by supporting and encouraging teen parents. The members work with the teen parents programs at Harper-Archer High School, Carver High School and Project Fatherhood at the Campbellton Road YMCA. Recent activities include visits to Carver and Harper-Archer to share refreshments with the teen parents and hold discussion and mentoring/counseling sessions. Members of Single and Saved held a cookout with the teenagers that included door prizes, games and fellowship.



SIS Women's Ministry

Promotes sisterhood among the women [ages 18 and up] of Zion Hill.

The Partnership Against Domestic Violence has been chosen as the outreach initiative of the Sisters In Sync [SIS] Women's Ministry. The Partnership is an umbrella organization which seeks to educate and inform victims of domestic violence for the protection of themselves and their children. The ministry hosted a speaker from the organization and is now in the process of deciding how best to utilize our members as volunteers within the organization.



The Voices of Oluwa
Outreach Initiative: The Atlanta Community Food Bank Product Rescue Center : : AIDS/Project Open Hand ::: President: Sis. Illya Menifee Outreach Coordinator: Sis. Yolanda Baity

A youth and young adult ministry in music [18 and up].

The Voices of Oluwa have participated as volunteers with The Atlanta Community Food Bank's Product Rescue Center [PRC] on the third Saturday of each month. The PRC is responsible for separating donated food from the community at large, and distributing the food to over 700 non-profit, community based agencies with feeding programs.



Recording Ministry
Provides audio tape recordings of church services and special events.



Timothy Byrd Usher Board

This group performs as doorkeepers for the church. They serve on the second and fourth Sundays of each month.

The Timothy Byrd Ushers continue to support the Families First transition home for teenage mothers and their babies. The Usher Board made donations to single parents who live in the Transition Home for Teenage Mothers to help assist the mothers and their children.



Trustee Ministry

A select group of members, voted on by the congregation, to manage the business affairs of the church.

The West Atlanta Head Start Center provides comprehensive early childhood development services to children in the pre-school years. The Trustee Ministry provides school supplies such as crayons, paper, pencils for the start of school. Members of the ministry support the children in head start by attending the 2001 graduation exercises. The Trustee Ministry also provided gold dollar coins and certificates for the 2001 head start graduates.



Women's Chorus

A ministry in music for women ages 18 and up.

The members of the Women's Chorus have provided financial support to the Atlanta Women's Shelter and the Clifton Night Shelter during this year. The chorus plans to begin outreach to Bonterra nursing home soon.

Youth League for Christ/Junior Ushers Outreach Initiative: Zion Hill Sick and Shut-In ::: President: Bro. Daniel Tarvin Jr. Outreach Coordinator: Sis. Charisse Richardson

Provides a positive environment for teens ages 13 through 18.

The Youth League for Christ and Junior Ushers are in the planning stage for an outreach initiative. The organizations anticipate choosing a new initiative that is an appropriate outreach activity for a teenage population.



Zion Hill Instrumentalists

A ministry in music for Zion Hill members and friends who praise God through various musical instruments.

The Zion Hill Instrumentalists make periodic visits to Georgia Regional Hospital. The visits consists of a mini-concert and fellowship with the residents who attend. During the Christmas holidays, the instrumentalists provide a concert of seasonal music a party with refreshments served by the instrumentalists, and individual gifts to each resident in attendance. The instrumentalists also play at local nursing homes.



Zion Hill Mass Choir

A music ministry.

Members from the Mass Choir visit the adult unit of Georgia Regional Hospital each fourth Saturday and fellowship with the residents through singing songs, giving testimonies, prayers, listening to the residents and celebrating the birthdays of the residents. In December, the choir participated in the annual Christmas parade with other organizations serving these clients, who are challenged with mental illness, mental retardation, and substance abuse.
